We are verifying images and video posted this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
