The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, did not confirm his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.

"My choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its vibrant immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment although he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his humble Astoria apartment.

Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
