The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
