Prisons Cannot Be Resolved Overnight, Minister States, while Law Enforcement Hunt For Two Individuals Mistakenly Freed
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has described the circumstances as a "complete and utter shambles," speaking earlier today.
Appearing on a radio program, he pointed to remarks made by the justice minister following a previous inmate discharge, saying that Lammy would implement stricter verifications.
"It took almost a week for the prison service supposedly to even become aware this has happened" and inform the authorities, Jenrick explains, "who are now a week late in the search to locate him."
The opposition figure condemns Lammy's handling during yesterday's parliamentary questions and accuses him of a "complete dereliction of duty."
Addressing incorrect inmate discharges in broader terms, Jenrick underlines that "each accidental discharge [...] is unacceptable."
He admits there were such releases under the former administration, but says the figure "has risen significantly" under the current government.
Advocating additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he adds: "The public want to see now are adequate checks put in place."
"That is a specific bureaucratic error by the justice department overseen by David Lammy," Jenrick says.
