Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Shortly Following Budapest Negotiations Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.

This past week Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting Trump had pressured him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the war on the current front line.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against halting the present battle positions.

The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would only amount to a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of maximalist demands that include the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its Western allies.

Zelensky commented conversations concerning the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the sole subject that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently preceded speculation that the US was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.

Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
