Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Prison Memoir Documenting His 20 Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a personal account in the coming weeks named Diary of a Prisoner, detailing his time endured behind bars.

This news was made less than two weeks following the ex-leader left prison as he contests his conviction for unlawful coordination in a case to secure political financing linked to the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“In prison there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he notes in a preview, implying the book is more about his musings while in solitary confinement as opposed to extensive analysis on the packed and troubled French prison system.

“I forget silence, which is missing in that facility, where noise is constant sound,” he adds. “The noise is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world grows stronger in prison.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, the former leader had appeared by video link from inside the facility, describing his time inside as gruelling. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this ordeal manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial I must endure. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

He, who led the nation for a five-year term, became the inaugural ex-leader from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to experience jail.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Cell Library

Unconfirmed is did he manage to review and analyze the three books he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the famous story, a plot where an innocent man is imprisoned then breaks out to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He remained in solitary confinement to protect him in a space roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in Paris. Two bodyguards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed just yogurt during his stay worried that meals provided might have been spat on. Although he had access to cook for himself but refused this, according to reports. Not known is whether Sarkozy will write about meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, Christophe Ingrain each day while he was in prison, told the release hearing his safety would improve outside jail than inside. “There were threats against his life, has heard screaming after dark and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began last month following a French court imposed a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to acquire campaign funds during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial planned for the coming spring.
