New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
