Two men fatally injured in a violent incident on a synagogue in Manchester have been identified by law enforcement as Adrian Daulby, aged 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66.

Three more people remain in hospital with critical wounds after the attacker drove a vehicle into people before using a bladed weapon on Thursday morning.

The violent incident, which law enforcement has confirmed was a terrorist incident, took place during Yom Kippur, the most sacred occasion in the Jewish faith.

The perpetrator, who was shot dead at the site, was a thirty-five-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent who was not previously known to counter terrorism police, according to government sources.

Official Statements

"Our hearts are broken," Britain's senior Jewish leader declared.

During a conversation on a national radio program, he said: "The tragic incident was a terrible shock to us, something which we had been concerned about might happen because of the build up."

The attack was not only "a very dark time" for Jewish citizens nationwide "but for everyone in our country," he emphasized.

Official Reaction

"The government's duty is to guarantee our Jewish community, our people can live their lives with safety and security," a senior government official declared.

"It is unacceptable that Jewish citizens in our country to feel compelled to live a limited religious practice, that they cannot pursue their activities and observe their religion and visit their worship places in freedom," she added.

The attacker was not recognized to terrorism investigators, she told news organizations, and it was "too early" to say if there was a terror network behind the attack.

Ongoing Probe

The criminal probe was "moving forward quickly" and there was an additional law enforcement visibility at religious institutions across the UK.

"Authorities allocate protective measures," the minister stated, adding: "It will be necessary to examine what additional measures we can implement to combat increasing anti-Jewish sentiment."

Law enforcement officials announced they were providing help to loved ones of the two men killed.

"Our heartfelt condolences are with the families of the victims at this incredibly difficult period," the lead investigator expressed.

He said that trained family liaison officers were in contact with them and would provide ongoing help through the investigative procedures.

"Although procedures exist which need compliance, we pledge to remain sensitive of community customs and concerns and to ensuring that the deceased and their relatives' requests are honored," he said, stating that the deceased individuals were from Crumpsall.

Autopsies are being conducted on the following day, per official sources.
