Manchester Synagogue Attack: A Casualty Appears to Have Been Fired Upon by Officers
In a devastating development, one of the victims killed at the Manchester synagogue assault appears to have been fatally wounded by armed police officers.
Police Announcement Reveals Firearm Injury
The senior officer of Greater Manchester Police stated that a forensic expert has initially concluded the man succumbed to a gunshot wound.
“We sought guidance overnight from forensic specialists before detailed autopsies set to occur this afternoon. The expert indicated that preliminary findings show one of the deceased victims likely sustained a injury matching a gunshot injury.”
Attacker Information
The assailant, Jihad al-Shamie, did not have a firearm, and all discharged rounds came from authorized firearms personnel at the scene.
It is believed the victim was part of the group positioned at the entrance trying to stop the attacker from gaining entry.
Consequences of Police Action
“Thus, it appears that subject to further forensic examination, the wound was unfortunately incurred as a unintended and heartbreaking result of the urgently required action taken by my officers to bring this vicious attack to an end.”
Victims Identified
Both individuals killed in the attack at Heaton Park synagogue in north Manchester earlier this week were identified as 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz.
These individuals lost their lives when a vehicle was employed to crash through the grounds of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, then stabbed worshippers in a brief violent spree that ended only when police with firearms fired upon him, ending his life near the synagogue entrance.
Additional Injuries
Three others were seriously injured in the attack on the Day of Atonement, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
The chief constable added, “Medical professionals have informed us that one of the three victims currently receiving treatment has also suffered a firearm injury, which is mercifully not life threatening. It is believed both victims were near each other behind the synagogue door, as attendees showed courage to prevent the attacker from getting inside.”

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with all of the families, and the wider community, impacted by these events in the region and elsewhere. Trained personnel are offering aid and assistance for everyone involved, including our brave first responders.”
Suspect Background
Authorities identified the perpetrator as the individual, 35, a British citizen of Syrian descent.
Greater Manchester police said that three additional individuals – two male suspects and a woman in her 60s – had been arrested “for alleged involvement in planning of acts of terrorism”.
