Anthony Joshua stood by his provocative remarks about being prepared to “kill” his opponent during a press event in Miami on Wednesday.

The remarks were initially uttered on Tuesday when the boxer was asked if he would show restraint against Paul, replying that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.

The upcoming contest against the internet personality turned fighter has sparked concern over safety concerns and the size difference between the two athletes.

Fury Calls AJ a “Disgrace”

Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury labeled Joshua a “disgrace” for his extreme language.

But the 36-year-old fighter, defended his position: “This is what I do, we fight. We have a licence to kill.

“I understand many people don't comprehend it but this is what my job is. I love what I do. Whatever happens, happens - provided that my hand is raised, that's what's important, with all due respect.”

He added, “That's just the mindset we have to have as warriors. I'm unsure if other fighters think that way. Perhaps they're a bit more reserved. The way my mind works. When you're in the ring, it's a dangerous thing. Anything can happen.”

“You hope your adversary leaves the ring safely, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed aware you just did your job. It wasn't personal.”

Paul's Fiery Retort

Jake Paul, a considerable underdog in the heavyweight contest as a natural cruiserweight, was equally fiery in his response.

“This is a modern day combat sport,” Paul said. “I'm prepared. I want his most powerful punches. I want there to be zero excuses when it's all said and done. We should kill each other.”

AJ will face his opponent, in his twenties, at Florida's arena in a fight many consider a major mismatched contest, with some suggesting it should have been approved as an non-professional fight.

The official fight will be contested over eight three-minute stanzas using regular ten-ounce gloves, with a stipulated maximum weight for Joshua.

He Claims He Was “Brought In to Rescue” Boxing

Despite the vulgar language used, Joshua suggested he has been “called in to save” boxing.

“They want me to stop the Jake Paul show and I understand it and that's why I have to carry the sport on my back in this bout,” he added.

The news conference also had more humorous exchanges, with Joshua laughing as his rival sang a nursery rhyme to him.

The final staredown concluded without incident, with the underdog striking a odd posture before Joshua remained composed and lightly grabbed Paul's necklace.

Both Fighters Deny Pre-Arranged Allegations

The surreal aspect of this fight has led to rumors about its legitimacy, including claims that he may be restricted from scoring a knockout.

“There's nothing in the contract, Joshua can confirm it. We're going to battle,” Jake Paul said.

The former champion, sporting a valuable chain, humorously added, “The only thing in the contract that got my attention was the money.”

Paul has claimed on his platforms that the fight earnings will be exceptionally high.

Jake Paul first gained fame as an online prankster, gathering a massive online audience.

He has never fought anyone of Joshua's pedigree but insisted that his opponent would take him seriously.

“It's a wise move on his part,” he commented. “This could possibly be, and will be, the largest loss of his career.”

A win for Paul would be arguably the biggest upset in the sport's history.

It would certainly leave an permanent mark on Joshua's record, but the athlete said it would not spell the end.

“I'd return again, move on,” he said. “I'll be main eventing again in a year or two. That's life. I'm a competitor in the sport.”
