Iranian forces say they have struck a US naval base in Bahrain, as Iran launched strikes throughout the Middle East in retaliation for a large-scale and ongoing assault against it by the US and Israel.

Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an zone close to the main base of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The full scale of any destruction is uncertain and the US has remained silent.

Regional Interceptions

Elsewhere across the region, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait - which all house American military installations - said they have shot down missiles in their airspace.

In the Qatari capital, the Qatari Ministry of Defence announced it had intercepted several missiles apparently targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the region.

Iran's Declared Retaliation

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared it was striking American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in reprisal for the strikes on Iran initiated by the US and Israel on Saturday morning.

That initial attack - launched at around 06:15 GMT - has so far targeted locations linked to the the regime, with US President Donald Trump calling on the Iranian people to rise up against the leadership.

Additional Developments

In the State of Israel, air raid sirens sounded across the country after the Israeli military said it had identified an incoming Iranian missile barrage.

The Ministry of Defence of the UAE said in a statement that the nation has been subjected to a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"Emirati air defenses engaged the missiles with notable success and shot down a number of missiles," the statement continued.

It said missile fragments fell on a populated district in the capital, resulting in some material damage and the death of one civilian.

The US Air Force operates from the Al Dhafra base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
