Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor remarked when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is a long way off.

"The future will decide," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the former president's team, using his digital presence and pushing a ballot measure that would boost Democratic House seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend segment on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to cut federal funds from the state and threatened eliminating the authority to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," he stated, after a recent tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that led to fatalities and injured individuals.

His administration highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment multiple times, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had earlier announced he was withholding additional funds from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand national statutes," his administration said in a last month's comment responding to the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A recent study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters said that the governor ought to campaign for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has increased to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.

In previous months, Newsom stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
