According to a high-ranking defense official, the American military carried out a fatal kinetic engagement on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.

“A US joint task force conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”

Context and Recent Strikes

This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to increase the military presence.

Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Actions Amidst Scrutiny

The government has encountered increasing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.

Although the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the military campaign may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
