US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to climate and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the shutdown began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest shutdown in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the finances at home," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.
